More women covering child support, alimony following divorce

by | Jun 8, 2018 | Divorce

An increasing number of women in New Jersey are earning college degrees and making money in the workplace today than in years past. As a result, more of them are also having to pay up when it comes to alimony and child support following divorce proceedings. In fact, a recent survey revealed that more than half of attorneys had seen a spike in the number of mothers making child support payments.

Decades ago, men were traditionally the ones who paid alimony and child support. Meanwhile, women were the ones who earned less income or decided to stay at home with the children, which meant they would get alimony following divorce proceedings. However, today, the script has flipped, with more women occupying higher-paying job positions than ever before.

Research shows that mothers are now the main breadwinners in two-fifths of families in the United States. Only three percent of about 400,000 recipients of alimony payments eight years ago were male. However, based on the current trend of females climbing the ranks in the workforce, this percentage could very well increase in coming years.

Divorce matters such as alimony and child support can be major sources of conflict during a divorce proceeding in New Jersey. However, if two parents are willing to tackle these issues at the negotiation table, they may be able to avoid going to divorce trial, which can be more expensive and spark more animosity. An attorney can offer a divorcing spouse the guidance he or she needs to pursue the most personally favorable outcome in this type of family law proceeding.
