Policeman facing drug charges may need solid criminal defense

by ktipping@findlaw.com | Nov 16, 2017 | Drug Crimes

A police officer in New Jersey was recently taken into custody on drug charges. The man’s arrest came after authorities completed a raid on this home. A strong criminal defense will likely be necessary to fight these charges and protect the man’s future.

Police said they contacted the prosecutor’s office on a recent Thursday because they felt that an officer was drug impaired. The 39-year-old man was later arrested after police raided his house and reportedly found several drugs and large-capacity ammunition magazines. The drugs that police allegedly discovered included marijuana, cocaine and anabolic steroids.

The man now faces charges of possessing steroids and cocaine, which are both crimes in the third degree. He also faces a charge of being a disorderly person due to his alleged marijuana possession. Meanwhile, his alleged possession of ammunition magazines is fourth-degree crime.

The man may understandably feel unsettled about facing multiple drug charges in New Jersey, as a drug conviction would lead to time behind bars and may make it difficult for him to claim certain jobs in the   future. These types of charges can also be a reputation destroyer. However, a qualified attorney will scrutinize the evidence that the prosecution plans to present to support such allegations, with the goal of finding holes in the case. If this evidence was not obtained in a legal manner, then it cannot be admitted in court. The criminal defense attorney’s ultimate goal is to help the client to achieve the most personally favorable outcome considering the circumstances surrounding the case.
