It’s a mistake to avoid these child support modification tips

by ktipping@findlaw.com | Nov 21, 2017 | Divorce

Like many others, you may find that you are required to pay child support every month.

While this is sure to change your financial situation in many ways, it’s good to know that the money you’re paying goes toward providing your child with a better life. This should give you peace of mind.

However, just because you can afford child support right now doesn’t mean that this will always be the case in the future. You could come to find that your situation changes, making it more difficult to pay what you owe.

If you find yourself in this situation, here are some child support modification tips to follow:

  • Take immediate action. You may think it’s okay to miss a payment or two, but this will come back to haunt you. If you can’t pay in full you need to take immediate action. There is no point in waiting a single day.
  • Learn more about child support laws in your state, including the steps you need to take if you want to request a modification.
  • Talk to the other parent about what’s going on in your life. It may not be easy to admit, but you need to let this person know what is happening. He or she may agree to a modification, which makes it much easier to receive approval from the court.
  • Keep making payments, even if you can’t send the full amount.
  • Collect proof that your circumstances are no longer the same, such as a termination letter from your employer.

If you make the mistake of avoiding these child support modification tips, you could find yourself in a worse position in the near future.

The best thing you can do is understand your legal rights and the steps you need to take if you are unable to pay what you owe. It can be time-consuming and frustrating to request a child support modification, but doing so will work in your favor in the long run. You simply need to know where to start and what you can do to tip the scales of justice in your favor.
