Man facing drug charges may benefit from strong criminal defense

by | Jul 11, 2018 | Drug Crimes

A man in New Jersey is currently facing charges for allegedly committing a drug crime. His arrest occurred following a traffic stop along Route 46. A strong criminal defense may help him to protect his future in light of his criminal charges.

According to authorities, the 30-year-old man was headed west along Route 46 at around 1:50 a.m. on a Sunday. At that time, police stopped him for reportedly failing to stay in his lane. When a police officer approached the man’s car and began to speak with him, he allegedly detected the smell of marijuana emanating from the car.

The police officer then proceeded to search the car. During the search, the officer reportedly discovered a cylinder made of plastic that contained what appeared to be marijuana. According to authorities, a metal grinder featuring what looked like marijuana residue was also found in the car. The man was taken into custody on charges of possessing marijuana, possessing drug paraphernalia, not maintaining his lane and possessing a drug in the car.

Facing drug charges can understandably be intimidating, as these types of charges can impact a person’s reputation and may result in jail time, a fine and even the loss of a job. However, anyone accused of committing a drug crime in New Jersey has the right to proceed to trial to fight the charges filed against him or her.  There are also diversionary programs in both the Superior Court of New Jersey for indictable crimes and in the municipal courts for disorderly persons offenses that can result in dismissal of the charges if successfully completed.  At trial, prosecutors must prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt before any conviction can be handed down. A criminal defense attorney will search for weaknesses in the prosecution’s evidence in an effort to attain the most personally favorable outcome possible for the defendant during this type of criminal case.  An experienced defense attorney will explore all possibilities in attaining a favorable resolution for clients charged with a crime.
